No it’s not a joke… Australia will be the 40th participant of the contest 2015 Eurovision Song Contest !
ORF, the EBU and the reference group invited SBS, historical Australian broadcaster of the competition, to join the competition for its 60th birthday. A one-off participation, not expected to be renewed.
Practical details…
To not reduce the chances of the current semi-final participants, Australia will be directly qualified for the final. A final with 27 contestants !
A jury will vote for both semi-finals and the final. A 50/50 vote with the viewers is still under consideration at this stage.
And if they win ?… Unfortunately, we do not go on holiday in Sydney however. If Australia win in Vienna, they could take part once more in 2016 and the competition would be held in Europe by SBS in partnership with the broadcaster of the host country.
